People who operate below and/or above the legal FCC CB band (also known as CEPT, Mid-Block FM, or the European Community (EC/EU) band) are known as freebanders. They use frequencies between 25 and 28 MHz, various modes of transmission, and have different goals. A lot of the users of the “freeband” are truckers who are trying to get away from the heavy noise of the legal 40 CB channels.
It’s not illegal only against fcc rules, cops don’t care or do anything when they see linear on your dash. The fcc can’t do anything and cries to the us marshal to take out a pirate fm station. The upper freeband half of 27mhz cb band is awesome, psk31 and sstv a d data modes. So clean and clear, i always do around 200 watts on 27.620mhz USB and chat with friends the next state over.
Yes they are operating outside the legal 40 channels and it is technically illegal. Most trucks are equipped with "exports" that have more than 40 channels (usually one or two "bands" above CH40 and two or three bands below CH1 so something like 25.615 to 28.305 MHz or 26.055 to 27.855 MHz, in places like Brazil and Russia they’ve actually just legalized everything from 25.615 to 27.855 (or 27.995 in Russia) because its just too hard to enforce a law that everybody is breaking.
